I started out by trying to turn an image into something that looked cartoon-like: lines for edges, with a simple colour palate. I never got what I wanted but in the process of experimenting I found a set of transformations that gives photographs a hand-made feel, almost painted.

I spent some time working on the idea of transforming one of those manipulated photographs into an actual painting, but that never produced the results I wanted. Early in 2013 I abandoned the idea of painting in this style, in favour of manipulating the images and producing them as prints. The technique has evolved as I apply a variety of edits and transforms to suit the original image.
